What are you passionate about?

What is passion?

The dictionary definition:

Passion –  a strong barely controllable emotion

When you discover topics, activities, even people you are passionate about they all bring about one common thing, emotion.

There is a saying, “When you do the type of work you’re passionate about, it doesn’t feel like work”.

When you work with passion you do it with excitement, joy and a smile. Your curiosity increases and you are more likely to enjoy the journey. As you work toward building your affiliate marketing business or online business, you will want it to be about something that gets you excited.

What is it you are passionate about?

  1. Make a list of the things you love to do.

    • When I sat down to write my list, it looked a bit like this….
    • My list was a bit longer, but you get the idea
      • cosmetics
      • makeup
      • beauty
      • fashion
      • writing
      • helping small businesses
      • coding
      • reading
      • living a healthier lifestyle
      • becoming more financially secure and stable
      • improving customer service interaction in the workplace
      • training and teaching others
      • creating
      • learning
      • taking photos
      • travel
  2. Once you have created you list and think about the things you like to do

    • Here is how my list came together
      • apply makeup to myself and others
      • give style advice
      • share what I know about fashion designers and trends
      • blogging about the things  I know and sharing it
      • coming up with ideas and suggestions to help myself and others improve
      • reading books on marketing and business
      • creating websites from scratch
      • shopping
      • finding alternative ways to enjoy the foods I love and work on improving my health and weight
  3. Next it is important to look at this list, to narrow it down to determine where you want to focus.

From my list, there are several niches that I could do well in:

    • fashion/style
    • health (lifestyle)
    • blogging
    • makeup
    • marketing
    • web design/development
    • business development
  4. As you look at your niches, think about this…How would you like to help your audience?

    • This information will help you start to formulate ideas of how you will communicate and connect with your audience.
  5. Will you create products and programs?

  •  Will you offer pdf downloads?
  • Does the idea of online conferences and/or webinars appeal to you?
  • Any thoughts about creating an online class?
  • How about a coaching program?
  • Will you offer products and services by other companies (affiliate links)?

Following these initial steps will help you determine the topic you want to build your affiliate marketing business with. It’s okay to have more than one niche, but they should be separated.           It’s hard to focus if your topic is to broad or if you have too many different niches on one website. An affiliate marketer builds their business by creating products, tools and programs to help their audience, in other words, you will be teaching them what you know with your blog posts, reviews, recourses and information you provide.

Once you discover your niche passion and topic, take a look at other websites that do the same thing.

Create a list of 10 websites in your niche and start studying them.

  • Look at the topics they post
  • Review the content
  • Look at website features (signing up for email, newsletter, product, service, contact form, etc)
  • Check out their social media pages

Buzzumo is a site that you can use to learn about the content that performs best for your audience. It’s a great way to analyze headlines and content your audience is interested in reading and learning about. I also found it helpful in determining the best social media platforms for sharing information.

Buzzumo does have a pricing structure and it is expensive, but they do have a micro plan for bloggers.

I also find it helpful to Google your topic(niche) to see keywords and sites that appear in the results:

For example: I searched the term “web design” and these were additional options/related terms offered:

This was important because it shows you different ways potential clients may search the term web design.
